Record Sales
1979 saw the greatest volume of singles sold in the UK with over 89 million record sales. Singles released by Blondie occupied the number one spot for the most weeks. The chart career of The Police was invigorated by the re-release of Roxanne. They would go on to have a couple of chart toppers later in the year. Abba singles were in the top 40 for 40 weeks, more than any other act. Bright Eyes, as sung by Art Garfunkel, and included on the soundtrack of the animated film Watership Down, was the best selling single of the year. The Wanderers
The Wanderers is set in the Bronx of 1963. The film features a jukebox full of rock and roll tracks, putting to good use hit single releases such as Runaround Sue, You Really Got a Hold on Me, and Baby It’s You. The Warriors
The Warriors return from the Bronx back to their home turf in the 1979 movie. A radio D.J. wishes them well after playing the song Nowhere To Run. It was filmed on New York locations at night with photography by Andrew Laszlo. The Wonder Wheel, from the opening titles, is located at Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park on Coney Island, in Brooklyn. The Wall
The spike in record sales, was associated with the popularity of dance music, so much so, that recording artists, not obviously associated with the genre, were bringing disco influences into their music. Pink Floyd, added elements to their song Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2, which then became the Christmas Number One. It was the final number one of the decade.
