Fashion Statement
1983 saw the commercialisation of t-shirts with boldly printed messages as a fashion statement. Katherine Hamnett's oversized, white T-shirts with large block letter slogans, were first launched, and later adopted, or modified, by the pop groups Wham!, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Queen. The Smithfield Street bridge in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is featured in the opening scene of the film Flashdance as day breaks, while the title song plays. Saturated fonts jump out onto the screen. It is, after all, one of the original high concept movies.
